Travel and Inspiration in The Colorado Rocky Mountains

So often, we get a craving to travel and love to go on spontaneous adventures and road trips, and even eloped in Tulum last November!

During our adventures is where we find inspiration for the art we hand paint and illustrate for the Nevele Society Etsy Shop. Traveling is also when we find all the unique one-of-a-kind vintage treasures for the shop or our home. 😉

On a chilly, rainy weekend this March, we were painting at our art table and daydreaming about road trips we could plan this year.  We were thinking back on the 3 Colorado adventures we had last summer and started looking through the all the amazing pictures we took for fun and inspiration.

Looking at all these pics began a new journey of it’s own! We began reminiscing about all the fun and wonderful memories we had as a family with our kids and shared as a couple, and to find inspiration for our new art collections!

“Rock Shop” Treasure Hunting

While looking through the thousands of photos we snapped at Pikes Peak, Garden of the Gods, The Collegiate Mountains, and the Eleven Mile Colorado State Park, we discovered the pictures of our visit to a super cool and quirky little rock shop!

We loved this rock shop so much, we stopped 3 times that week – but never broke the code of the travel budget!

The sign in the window says, “Did you know? Theres 23 million acres of public land in Colorado, yet you bring your dog here to poop in my yard!” HAHAHAHAH!!!!

While wondering through the store and exploring all the rocks, crystals, and Native American treasures, we found a shelf of amazing hand carved Hopi Indian Kachina dolls!

The shelf in the rock shop was covered with these unique treasures, and each one was beautifully carved and painted by hand by a Native American artisan. Even though we wanted to take all of them back to the Nevele Society studio for inspiration – the travel budget meant pictures would have to be our souvenir haha!

Native American Tribal Art – Hopi Kachina Dolls

To Hopis, it is essential to preserve harmony with the world around them, not only with man and other animals but with objects in nature, which the Hopis believe to possess life.

Since the Kachinas (kah-chee-nah), or Katsina (kahts-ee-nah) to the Hopi people, embody these spirits, they are the spiritual guardians of the Hopi people and their way of life.

Kachina dolls represent the spiritual beings of the religion and daily life of the Hopi people.  These dolls were very important in the daily life of this Native American tribe, as they have significance in both ceremonies and teaching the Hopi beliefs to their children.

The hand made Hopi Native American dolls in the photo gallery above are traditionally carved from cottonwood root and painted by hand.

New Southwest Hopi Kachina Art Collection

After rediscovering these pictures we took in that little rock shop and researching more of the meaning behind these Kachina dolls and the Hopi Native American Tribe, we were so inspired to create new art with them!

After sitting on the sofa and drawing one Hopi Kachina doll for fun over a cup of coffee, the entire weekend was spent drawing and painting an entire collection!!

And now, due to many more cups of coffee and weekends spent putting ink and paint on paper, we have released the new southwestern art collection in the Nevele Society Etsy Shop!

This Hopi Kachina print collection was incredibly fun for us to collaborate on together – and our very first art collaboration as husband and wife!

This entire collection of original art was hand illustrated in black ink by Dylan Yarter, and beautifully hand painted in watercolor by Kate Yarter.
